Well, I'll tell you anyway. I've had a home page since the very early days of the web. Later I set up a home page with the standard dark grey background. My first intention was to make a home page because it was the new thing to do. My later, more evolved intention was to make a set of pages that would be useful. I wanted to avoid having an "ego page" as they were called at that point. My pages would give me a place to put documentation, pictures, and other useful items online. This worked out in practice to some extent but not fully. I just never found the time. Eventually I took a long break from the web. I never took my pages down, although my top page was accidentally erased.
Skip forward six years. The web is now a much better place. The technical means in large part now exist to have pages that actually do split the data and the representation of the data into different files. Good deal. Also, I've resigned myself to the fact that I won't be doing much documentation writing for the foreseeable future. So, the new goal of my web site is to provide a place for me to experiment with all of the stuff invented while I was away.
I may use my site to get a job if I'm looking for one. I may use it to keep in touch with family. I will probably use it for political activism purposes. For the most part, though, my site is for me to use as a test bed.
Compliance with the standards is a goal. Beauty is not a goal. This is not a blog, but I may on occasion post rants.
The current site is and always will be a work in progress. These pages are derived from the state of my web site in 1996, but are in the process of being brought up to current standards. Fragments of my old site remain, and you old-timers will probably recognize at least some of them.
Did the name of the page come out of thin air? Well, yes. I can admit that now. I do have a brief history of the title, although keep in mind that this next page is totally useless (pointed out by asdamick).
